The History of the Montauk Valley Traction Company

The Montauk Valley Traction Company (MVTC) was founded when the Montauk Valley Railroad abandoned the right of way to Montauk City, after a grading project on the Stone Mountain Branch Line. The Project left the former city spur 25 feet above the current grade of the branch line. The junction point was sold off to the CG Corporation that then built Weekes Park. Concerned about the transportation of the citizens of Montauk to Weekes Park over the dilapidated spur, the CG Corp. rebuilt the right of way to the Montauk City limits. The city formed a partnership with the CG corp. and thus the MVTC was formed. The MVTC connects with the Montauk Valley Railroad at Montauk City and at Balance Junction.

The Montauk Valley Traction Company maintains a repair shop at the outskirts of Montauk City. The MVTC shops consists of a single stall engine house that was moved, by train, from Newtown Yard when it was renovated. The shop can maintain the MVTC’s gas electric’s and the trolley’s the operate on the line.

The Montauk Valley Traction Company maintains two towers that controls the flow of traffic over the line. The first tower is located at Weekes Park and is named Tobin Tower. Tobin tower is named for the MVTC first chief engineer Tobin Dax. While the second tower is located next to the shop and is named Ulbirght Tower. Ulbirght Tower named for Kenneth Ulbirght the real weight behind the formation of the MVTC.

While the Montauk Valley Traction Company is small in size and in operation it is well loved and has an unparalleled safety record! It also owns and maintains the MVTC Trolley Museum, located on Keeler Street. Keeler street was named for Charles Keeler well know traction buff.

On an historical note: The Montauk Valley Traction Company’s first gas electric was donated by Steven Sint. The gas electric came with a trailer that was to big for the lines stations and is used as the MVTC offices.
